Project: Grants for Healthy Ecology

Value: $75,000


Objective: To reduce the U.S. contribution to global climate change.
Commitment: To provide grants to outstanding projects that will: 1. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from both public and private sources; 2. Develop, advocate, and implement state and regional policy initiatives to decrease greenhouse gas emissions; and 3. Analyze and communicate the regional effects of climate change.
Background: In its environment & sustainability grant-making capacity, the Compton Foundation seeks a balanced and healthy relationship among humans, other life and the planet. The Foundation believes it is possible to pursue a holistic and sustainable vision of conservation which integrates concern for the environment with economic viability; which links urban and rural priorities; and which views humanity as part of the natural world.

Update:
December 2005:
We made a grant of $25,000 to the California Climate Action Registry, a grant of $30,000 to Redefining Progress for their project entitled "Environmental Justice and Climate Change Initiative", and a grant of $20,000 to Western Resource Advocates for their "Western Utilities Emissions Reduction Project". The Compton Foundation Board meets twice a year, in June and in December. We do not generally receive reports on the accomplishments of our grants until 13 months after they are awarded. Therefore, we will be able to report results by March of 2007.
